NOMINATIONS FOR COACH OF THE YEAR
We are now beginning to take nominations for COACH OF THE YEAR. Please e-mail lorene@schoolchess.org with your nomination – please send any information about your coach by March 31st.

The qualities we are looking for is someone who encourages participation in chess tournaments, shows enthusiasm for all players whether they are advanced or beginner, does not just focus on winning, will spend time with his players and help students with good sportsmanship as well as little goals at all tournaments. Re-assuring and supportive not critical - always offers hope and encouragement. The Coach of the Year looks for ways not just to improve the chess of his players, but looks for ways to improve chess and chess opportunities in our community

Coaches are the heart and soul of every chess community. When adult players look back on time spent learning and growing with the game, at the center of those memories stands the coach.

Who are chess coaches? What qualities define these extraordinary and generous people? It is first a love of the players. Coaches’ watch their young players learn and grow and make the game their own. They mentor sportsmanship, goal setting, forward thinking and confidence – as well as the ability and desire to compete. They offer reassurance and support in place of criticism. They offer hope and encouragement. The finest coaches improve not only their players’ chess, but improve opportunities for chess in their communities, and improve the game itself.
